Make your website work for you

Your website should be making you money. If it is not, something needs to change, and often it is the basics: your budget, how people find the site, and how easy it is to use.

A website has a job to do

It is not worth having a website if it does not benefit your business somehow. If your website is not bringing in customers, it is not doing its job. Ideally a website pays for itself, and you make money from it within the time frame you set.

There are many things to consider when trying to get more people to your website. Many people focus on making the site easy to use, and that is a very important part of earning from it. But if not enough people visit, then no matter how easy the site is to use, it will not earn what it should.

Budget for being found

When you budget for your website, put something aside for search engine optimisation (SEO). Done well, it puts your site in front of more of the people who are looking for what you sell.

The key is to be seen by the people who are searching. If you run a lawn bowls business and everyone in your area who searches for "lawn bowls" sees your website, you will have more customers and more interest than if you did not show up in the results at all.

Have a plan for your website

Many businesses make the mistake of not having a plan for their website. Without one, the site cannot achieve what you want, because you have not decided what that is. Some questions to answer before you start:

  • What is your budget for building the website?
  • How will customers find it?
  • How much revenue should it bring in each month, or how many enquiries and quotes?
  • How much time do you have to manage it, or does it need to handle enquiries and purchases by itself?

These questions shape your website from the earliest stage of its development, and with clear goals the way forward becomes clearer. As the website builds a reputation, starts to cover its costs and then makes you money, managing it becomes less of a burden: you know that what you put into it comes back.

So if your website is not bringing in the business it should, take another look at your plan for it, and at what could bring more people to it. Even basic search engine optimisation can help.
